How to Train Your Golden Retriever

Sit and Stay! How to Train Your Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is one of the best pets a family can have. However, having an unruly one will make that experience a bit hard to swallow. If you want a companion that follows your commands, below are some of the tips on how to train your Golden Retriever.

Know the Basic Commands

Before anything else, you need to make sure that your Golden Retriever knows the four basic commands. These are Sit, Stay, Lie, and Heel. When you say Sit, your dog should sit down. Stay tells your dog not to move from where he is standing. Lie is the command to make your Golden Retriever lie down on the floor. Lastly, Heel will make the dog follow you while you are walking.

Be Patient

Golden Retrievers are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. You should be patient with your pet during training. If he or she can’t get the lesson during the first couple of sessions, don’t be frustrated. Your dog will eventually get it over time. Having lots of patience is one of the important tips on how to train your Golden Retriever.

Select a Special Treat

Treats are important when training dogs. It is important that you choose a treat that your Golden Retriever loves. Then use this treat as a reward during training sessions. You should use this treat for anything else. This is one way to make the dog know when one is doing good or not.

Everything Starts with Sit

The first thing you need to know on how to train your Golden Retriever is Sit. First, make the dog stand in front of you. While holding that special treat, move your hand above your dog’s head. Gently push the dog’s butt to the ground, and praise the dog once he/she assumed the sitting position. You should give the treat as well. Repeat this, but this time teaches the dog the Sit command. Continue teaching the dog until one learns the trick and responds to sit correctly. And don’t forget to give your dog a treat when he does so.

Lie Down

After your Golden Retriever learns how to sit, the next command to teach your dog is lie down. While the dog is sitting, hold a treat in your hand and move it towards the ground. As the dog starts to follow the hand, move it at the ground towards you. When your dog is lying down, praise him/her and reward with the treat. Repeat this until your dog learns the command.

These are just some of the tips on how to train your Golden Retriever. Follow the instructions above and your dog will be sitting and lying down in no time.
